Hand Held 3D Scanning for Cultural Heritage: Experimenting Low Cost Structure Sensor Scan
2017
In the last years 3D scanning has become an important resource in many fields, in particular it has played a key role in study and preservation of Cultural Heritage. Moreover today, thanks to the miniaturization of electronic components, it has been possible produce a new category of 3D scanners, also known as handheld scanners. Handheld scanners combine a relatively low cost with the advantage of the portability. The aim of this chapter is two-fold: first, a survey about the most recent 3D handheld scanners is presented. As second, a study about the possibility to employ the handheld scanners in the field of Cultural Heritage is conducted. In this investigation, a doorway of the Benedictin…
Cost modeling for sludge and waste management from wastewater treatment plants: an empirical approach for Spain
2013
Abstract Wastewater treatment involves the generation of large volumes of sludge and other waste. Managing this waste in an economical and environmentally acceptable way has become a matter of increasing importance over the last few years. While the technologies and processes to reduce sludge generation are being widely studied, research on the economic aspects is much more limited. This study applies a cost-modeling methodology that uses statistical information from a sample of Spanish wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to generate a sewage sludge and waste management cost function with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of the cost structure and predicting the cost savings…
Cost Modelling In Waste Water Treatment Processes: An Empirical Analysis For Spain
2007
The reuse of resources obtained from regenerating wastewater is an absolute must both from a social and also environmental and health viewpoint. For any water reuse project to be viable, water treatment processes must be optimised. In this sense, extensive knowledge of the structure of costs associated to each of the treatment technologies available is necessary. This research applies cost modelling methodology by adjusting a series of representative functions and an empirical analysis is undertaken for a sample of wastewater treatment plants in Spain.
Modeling and Analysis of a New Process for Pyruvate Production
2005
Early process development is crucial for the economic and environmental performance of a final production process. A new process for the production of pyruvate is presented as a case study to show how process modeling and an analysis of the results regarding economic and environmental aspects improves the understanding of the process, its cost structure, and its environmental impact. It also enables the quantification of process improvements and the comparison of alternative designs. The model of the pyruvate production shows how strain and fermentation improvements propagate through the process and affect its economic and environmental performance. The comparison of two alternative purific…
Operating leverage and the cost of debt in European agri-food firms
2020
Aim of study: To analyse the effect that operating leverage exerts on the cost of debt of agri-food firms in Europe, both in isolation and indirectly through its other risk factors.Area of study: We used panel data made up of 18,360 European firms from 2009 to 2016 (146,880 observations).Material and methods: The data were extracted from the ORBIS database and EUROSTAT. The econometric approach was estimated by the Generalized Method of Moments.Main results: The results obtained confirm that operating leverage or cost structure, in addition to affecting the cost of debt, also affects the relationship between that cost and other sources of risk. More specifically, indebtedness, size, specifi…
